In the late 19th century, the street became integral to the area's public transport network. Mule-drawn trams operated from 1872 until 1897, followed by electric trams from 1897 to 1993. The introduction of the Metro do Porto's Eurotrams revitalized the street's transportation role, with modern trams running along its length.

Beyond transportation, Rua Brito Capelo has long been a commercial hub. It serves as the main shopping street of Matosinhos, shared by pedestrians and the Eurotrams of the Metro do Porto.

The street also features architectural landmarks, such as Brito Capelo 183, a 1937 Art Deco house that has been fully restored and now offers accommodations. This building reflects the area's architectural evolution and its adaptation to contemporary uses.
