Flaming 37 Mega Thrash

Filmed by a signalman I know who caught this class 37 giving it all at Great Rocks in the peak district.

This is one of the UK's oldest type of locomotive still in use today They are Diesel Electric so the engine drives a generator and electric motors drive the wheels. This was filmed in the 1980's near a stone quarry. Trains are brought out in 2 halves each weighing about 1000 tons. It is a steep gradient and takes skill to get maximum power without the loco slipping. This driver is for some reason leaving to loco on full power causing the engine to overspeed and the wheels to slip. Systems on the loco cut the fuel to prevent damage to the engine and prevent damage to the electric motors which drive the loco and wheels/rails, as the revs die down fuel is again admitted to the engine which is turbo charged, at low revs the turbos are not able to draw enough air in to burn the fuel efficiently and it is being drawn through the engine into the exhausts where it is igniting causing the flames and black smoke.
