After six months of waiting for the deal to complete and carrying out some essential repairs, my friend finally took delivery of his new yacht — a stunning Sun Odyssey 43 DS. In this episode, I join him for her maiden voyage, sailing her home from Titchmarsh Marina back to Benfleet Yacht Club.
We couldn’t have asked for better conditions. On day one we set off out of the river Orwell, enjoying fast sailing on a beam reach before spending the night at Queenborough Harbour. Matt got some valuable docking and manoeuvring practice there before we set off again on day two. With perfect winds, we even managed some beautiful downwind wing-on-wing sailing before making the final push back to Benfleet.
Getting a 43-foot yacht up the narrow Benfleet creek on just enough tide at the end of the day was the perfect finale to an unforgettable maiden voyage. This trip had it all — new boat excitement, fast sailing, big boat handling, and the joy of bringing a yacht home for the very first time.
