Disney adapted the seventh-century ballad of Mulan into a blockbusting 1998 animated musical feature. The new "Mulan" is live action and song-and-dance free, but it does subtly reference the popular cartoon version.
The role of Mulan went to popular Chinese American actress Yifei Liu, who recalled auditioning for the part on the Disney Studios lot.
Veteran actor Jet Li portrays the emperor in the new film, and said he was most impressed by one message the movie adds to Mulan's centuries-old legend: Be true to yourself.
