Govt unveils crackdown on disability benefits in bid to save £5 bn

After weeks of speculation, the Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall has laid out plans to cut five billion pounds from the rocketing welfare bill.

The government will spend one billion pounds a year on helping people back into work. But only the most severely disabled will be able to claim personal independence payments, and young people could be banned from claiming incapacity benefit.

The plans have caused a split in the Labour party - with some of its own MPs saying they will push more disabled people into poverty.
