A geared industrial roll shown in the figure is driven at 300 rev/min by a force F acting on a 3-in diameter pitch circle as shown. The roll exerts a normal force of 30 lbf/in of roll length on the material being pulled through. The material passes under the roll. The coefficient of friction is 0.4. The heat treated machined steel shaft has an ultimate strength of 𝑆𝑢t = 105 ksi and a yield strength of 𝑆𝑦 = 82 kpsi. The reliability goal for endurance limit is 0.99. Determine the factor of safety considering both fatigue and first cycle yielding assuming the shaft diameter of 1.1 in.
