Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare immune deficiency disorder that occurs in 1 in 50,000 births worldwide per year. The Immune Deficiency Foundation says unless it’s diagnosed early, it can often prove fatal to children within just a few months.
Pittsburgh residents Kayla and Eric were enjoying their time as new parents to their only son, Easton, until his health took a turn for the worse. After a series of tests, they finally learned Easton had HLH, despite being under a year old.
Kayla and Eric walk us through the challenges of raising a child with a rare disease, from the difficulty of getting a diagnosis, to the day Easton received a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
This episode also features in-depth commentary from renowned expert Michael Jordan, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
