The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet began their ministry in the western United States when Bishop Salpointe asked them to come and be teachers in the Arizona territory. In 1870, seven sisters began the cross-country journey by train, ship, and covered wagon, so they could serve their “dear neighbor.” One sister, Monica Corrigan, kept a diary of their travels, which tells the story of their days spent walking in the desert heat.
In May 2019, a group of six CSJs, led by Sister Mary Murphy, retraced the steps of these bold women in a pilgrimage to remember their bravery and courage.
