Bitter Cold, Hot Action | BNSF & Amtrak at Hitchcock Woods

A short but action-packed railfan visit to Hitchcock Woods near Lisle, Illinois delivered some great train action despite bitter cold January conditions and a wind chill of just 12°F.

During this quick stop along the BNSF Chicago Subdivision, I was able to catch two westbound BNSF freight trains as well as Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, fresh off its long cross-country journey and heading toward Chicago Union Station. Even though the cold cut the session short, the trains didn’t disappoint.

Hitchcock Woods is a popular railfan spot along this busy triple-track main line, and this video shows how rewarding even a brief visit can be when the timing is right—especially in winter. From heavy freight to long-distance Amtrak passenger service, this clip captures the variety that makes BNSF railfanning in Chicagoland so exciting.
