Trump’s Call Changes Tokyo’s Stance? Japan's Takaichi Praises US Role In Ukraine, Eyes China Moves

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reaffirmed Tokyo’s strong alliance with the United States during a phone call with President Donald Trump, following rising tensions with China over Taiwan.

Takaichi said Trump requested the call and briefed her on his recent conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but declined to provide details — including whether Taiwan was discussed.

The diplomatic tension comes after China accused Japan of “crossing a red line.” Earlier this month, Takaichi suggested that a Chinese naval blockade or actions against Taiwan could trigger a Japanese military response. Beijing called the remarks “shocking” and a “grave violation of international law,” even sending a formal letter of protest to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
