The song in this video is 'The Selkie's Lament' by folk singer Tamsin Quin (who also carves the spoons you see in this video)
Here we are in Northern Scotland, Caithness and about to travel over to the Orkney Islands. This part of Britain is famous for tales about Selkies - shape shifting seal people that live in great halls beneath the waves.
The folklore here in the northern tip of britain is a unique blend of Celtic, Gaelic, Pictish, Scottish, Orcadian and Nordic from the Scandinavian and viking settlers.
This story is similar in theme to many other stories involving fairies, the fae, the 'others', magic and the wee folk, as well as other aquatic folk such as mermaids and the fin folk.
Told by Storyteller Oliver Lavery.
