70 kilometers, two legendary gorges, and winds so strong they nearly push me backwards. This ride from Rethymno to the south coast of Crete isn’t just a cycling adventure: it’s a fight between human resolve and the raw forces of nature.
The journey begins with a breathtaking descent into Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where towering cliffs rise on both sides, carved by the Kourtaliotis River. This gorge isn’t just a natural wonder: it holds spiritual significance too. According to local legend, Saint Nicholas Kourtaliotis lived here, and his “kourtala” (handclaps) can still be heard echoing in the wind.
But beauty doesn’t always come without risk. In the middle of this dramatic descent, a tourist suddenly steps into the road, forcing me to brake hard and react sharply: one of those heart-pounding moments that reminds us how alive cycling makes us feel.
The real test comes with the climb into Kotsifou Gorge. Narrow, winding, and blasted by fierce headwinds, this stretch of road pushes me to my limits. Every pedal stroke feels like moving through a wall of resistance, but cresting the gorge delivers the ultimate reward: the satisfaction of conquering both nature and self-doubt.
For cyclists, adventurers, and anyone who loves raw, unfiltered stories from the road, this ride offers it all: scenery, history, danger, and triumph.
