Didn't forget about completing this little series on the DH5U. I've just been kicking the can of recapping the digital board for over a year, until one afternoon in October when I felt it was time. That, and I wasn't crazy about about the footage for the digital pre-amp board recapping came out; my camera's lack of optical zoom and focus kinda makes showing off solder work a challenge. The section on the digital board begins at 20:27.
Anywho, to reiterate, there was nothing critically wrong with this unit aside from some power supply caps and a worn capstan belt; recapping the digital pre-amp and digital boards is just preventative maintenance. The SMT caps on the digital board were definitely on their way out (low audio on standard VHS tapes pointed this out). I also failed to record myself putting the digital pre-amp board back into place, but with the mechanism back in its place, just snap the board into the plug on the main board, then plug the ribbon cable from the head drum back into the socket on the pre-amp (this has proved tricky for me in past, you will likely need some tweezers to guide the ribbon back in). Put the shielding back on and screw everything back down.
One thing I'll advise, make sure the cables from the digital pre-amp board are "tucked back" and not above the mechanism when screwing the cover back on. Otherwise, when you put the cover back on, you might experience a loud noise as the cables hit against the rotating head drum...good thing nothing got hurt after that happened to me...
