Alberta Premier Danielle Smith delivers an address to Albertans on the province’s path forward with the federal government. The speech follows Premier Smith’s meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday, their first since the federal election, as well as a meeting with her caucus.
She announces the appointment of a Special Negotiating Team to represent the province in negotiations with the federal government. The team will negotiate for a guaranteed corridor for Alberta’s resources and an end to all federal interference in the development of provincial resources. The negotiating team will also push for an end to federally-imposed export taxes and restrictions, and for Alberta to receive the same per capita federal transfers as Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.
In the address, Premier Smith states that she would hold a secession referendum next year if citizens gather the requisite number of signatures on a petition.
