Bull elks in the area have traditionally been 300 plus and some even up to 350 to 375. Additionally, during certain times of year the Cowboy Experience will be available to come help gather cattle.

The resort town of Ruidoso is a short 17 miles away which offers great restaurants, winter and summer activities at Ski Apache Resort, and horse-racing events at Ruidoso Downs, home of The All American. The legacy of Smokey the Bear: Discovered as a cub in 1951 near Capitan. He was a lone cub, badly burned from a wildfire, but soon recovered and became the national mascot for forest fire prevention, with the motto, Only YOU can prevent forest fires. Today, Smokey the Bear is buried in a park in nearby Capitan, New Mexico, and the town continues to honor the memory of this symbol for conservation and responsibility for the land.
