This video explains how to use Oracle SQL functions like NVL and DECODE to handle dynamic user input in Oracle APEX applications. When building interactive reports or search forms, users may enter multiple parameters—some optional, some mandatory, and others left blank. Writing SQL that can adapt to all these cases without error is a common challenge. NVL and DECODE offer simple but powerful ways to make your WHERE clauses flexible and reliable.
In the demo, I show how to apply NVL to substitute NULL values with defaults and use DECODE to manage conditional filtering based on user input. This approach is especially useful when building dynamic search functionality in APEX, where the presence or absence of user-entered values needs to control how records are filtered. By the end of the video, you’ll see how to create cleaner, more efficient SQL queries that adapt automatically to the input provided.
