Mad Zeppelin - Live: Black Dog [ Led Zeppelin cover ]

Mad Zeppelin live zu sehen, ist wegen der weiterhin geltenden COVID-19-Maßnahmen leider auf absehbare Zeit immer noch nicht möglich, und daher versorgen wir Euch hier immer wieder mit Videos unserer Led Zeppelin Coverversionen, um die Wartezeit zu überbrücken.

In dieser Woche haben wir uns den Hard Rock-Klassiker "Black Dog" ausgesucht. Ganz herzlichen Dank auch an Jürgen Schramm für die tolle Aufnahme aus dem "Musiktheater REX" in Bensheim, die er uns zur Verfügung gestellt hat.

Die Original-Version von "Black Dog" ist der Opener des 1971 erschienen "Four Symbols"-Album, auch bekannt als "Led Zeppelin IV". Der Song entstand, nachdem Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones und John Bonham den Track "Oh Well" von Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac hörten und begeistert waren vom dortigen Wechsel zwischen hartem Gitarrenriff und A-Capella-Gesang. Dieser Wechsel gibt auch Black Dog seine typische Struktur. Kurioserweise geht das Riff nicht auf eine Idee von Jimmy Page, sondern auf John Paul Jones zurück. Als Led Zeppelin am lange namenlosen Song arbeiteten, bemerkten sie, dass sich immer bei genau diesem Titel ein ebenso namenloser schwarzer Labrador ins improvisierte Studio im Landhaus "Headley Grange" verirrte - prompt erhielt der Song den Titel "Black Dog".

Unsere Version ist (wie oft) eine Mischung aus Origial-Studio- und Live-Version, sprich: die Gesangsphrasierungen, die Michael Dorp singt, sind mehr an Robert Plants Gesang der Studio-Version orientiert; die Instrumentierung (vor allem das Ende) eher an der Live-Version aus dem New Yorker Madison Square Garden von 1973, veröffentlicht 1976 als Teil des Konzertfilms "The Song Remains The Same".

This week we chose the hard rock classic "Black Dog". Many thanks to Jürgen Schramm for the great recording made at the "Musiktheater REX" in Bensheim, which he made available to us.

The original version of "Black Dog" is the opener of the "Four Symbols" album released in 1971, also known as "Led Zeppelin IV". The song was created after Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham heard the track "Oh Well" by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and were enthusiastic about the there-implied change between a hard guitar riff and a capella vocals. This change also gives Black Dog its typical structure. Curiously, the riff is not based on an idea by Jimmy Page, but by John Paul Jones. When Led Zeppelin worked on the still nameless song, they noticed that it was precisely at this time, whenever they worked on this particular track, that an equally nameless black Labrador retriever always strayed into the improvised studio in the country house "Headley Grange" - so the song was promptly given the title "Black Dog".

Our version is (as is often the case) a mixture of the original studio and a live version: the vocal phrasing that Michael Dorp sings is more oriented towards Robert Plant's vocals in the studio version; the instrumentation (especially the end) rather on the live version from New York's Madison Square Garden from 1973, released in 1976 as part of the concert film "The Song Remains The Same".
