Charles VI, French King from 1380-1422, likely suffered from paranoid schizophrenia. After a particularly bad episode, a charivari was held to help lighten the mood and cheer him up... but in the process, he was almost burned to death.
In fact, several other men were burned to death in the bals de ardents, or the Ball of the Burning Men.
In today's episode, we'll go over the Ball of the Burning Men - what was going on in history that led to this event? And what does it have to do with the Hundred Year's War?
From sibling conflicts to raucous celebrations, hairy costumes to flaming... man-bits, today's episode goes over part of the strange and tragic story of Charles VI's life as "Charles the Mad."
