The Navacerrada Reservoir (Embalse de Navacerrada) is located in the municipality of Navacerrada, in the northwest of the Madrid autonomous community, Spain. It sits at an altitude of approximately 3,937 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level. The reservoir was created by constructing a dam on the Samburiel River (also known as the San Muriel or Navacerrada River), a major tributary of the Manzanares River. Additionally, it receives water from the Navalmedio Reservoir through a transfer channel.
The reservoir’s primary function is to supply water to various municipalities on the Madrid side of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range.
By the mid-20th century, many of these towns faced severe water shortages, which led to the construction of the reservoir, significantly contributing to regional development.
Construction of the Embalse de Navacerrada dam began in 1964, and although it was completed in 1968, the dam was not put into operation and officially inaugurated until July 17, 1969. The dam was built to ensure water supply and regulate water flow for the needs of the local population.
The dam’s main functions include:
• Water Supply: Providing drinking water to nearby communities.
• Irrigation: Supporting the region’s agricultural needs.
• Flood Control: Regulating water levels and preventing downstream flooding.
This reservoir is part of the hydrological system that supplies water to the capital region.
Recreational Aspects:
• Swimming and water sports are prohibited in the reservoir.
• Fishing is allowed with the proper permits, and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is the most commonly caught species.
• The municipality of Navacerrada has developed walking trails around the reservoir, including wooden bridges and crossings over the Samburiel River and Navalmedio Channel. These trails offer up to two-hour hikes with scenic views.
The Canal de Isabel II, a government-owned water management company, operates the reservoir and dam.
At the base of the Navacerrada Dam, there is a drinking water treatment plant (ETAP Navacerrada), which has been operational since 1970 with a maximum capacity of 35.3147 cfs (1 m³/s). In 2014, the facility underwent a €3 million modernization to improve water quality and treatment efficiency.
In 2019, a project was launched to build a new pumping station for water treatment management in Navacerrada. The plan included four pumps with a capacity of approximately 19.07 cubic feet per second (135 liters per second) and approximately 8,530.2 feet (2.6 km) of new pipelines with diameters ranging from approximately 15.75 to 47.24 inches (400–1,200 mm).
These upgrades aim to enhance the efficiency of water treatment in the area.

• Capacity at NML: 2.91 billion U.S. gallons (11 million m³)
• Elevation at NML: 3,792 feet (1,156 m)
Dam Characteristics:
