Update on Ukraine - Putin's Prospects
An online discussion with New York Times journalist and former Ukraine resident James Brooke
Recorded Monday, October 3, 2022
In September, Ukrainian soldiers broke through Russian lines, sending thousands of soldiers to flight and liberating 3,500 square miles of occupied land. This year, the Biden Administration is funneling billions of dollars worth of armaments into Ukraine. The Ukrainians are showing that they know how to use them. The US-EU strategy seems to be stop Putin at Europe’s eastern gate – and to deal an ax blow to the Russian military. A retired American general recently joked that Lithuania could now take St. Petersburg.
What’s next? Will Putin go nuclear?
Russian history shows that when a Czar loses a war, he loses power.
What are Putin’s prospects?
James Brooke, a veteran foreign correspondent, will explore the outlook this fall for the Russia-Ukraine war. A Lenox native, Brooke reported for 24 years for The New York Times, including many trips to Russia. After the Times, he reported for eight years from Moscow, first as Bloomberg bureau chief, then as Voice of America bureau chief. Most recently, he reported for six years on Ukraine, returning from Kyiv to Lenox one year ago. He writes a twice monthly Foreign Affairs column for The Berkshire Eagle.
