Gulu, gulu (english translation "I lay and lay") is a Latvian folk song.
Lyrics and translation:
Gulu, gulu miegs nenāk, (I lay and lay though I do not feel drowsy)
Apakš kupla lazdu krūm'. (Under a flourishing hazelnut bush)
Atnāk mana mīļā māte, (Comes my dear mother)
"Ko tu guli? Kas tev kaiš?" ("Why are you laying? What's the matter?")
"Celies augšā, nāc man līdz', " ("Get up and come with me,")
"Es tev došu raibaliņ'!" ("I will give you a cow!")
"Necelšosi, nevajag," ("I won't get up, I don't need,")
"Man to tavu raibaliņ'!" ("that cow of yours!")
Then comes the father and offers land, yet I still do not get up. But then! Comes my lover and offers me a ring! I do get up and I take the ring, I take the land and I take the cow!
