What if your next Minnesota hike began with the crisp scent of balsam and ended atop a billion-year-old lava cliff above Lake Superior? That’s the promise of Shovel Point at Tettegouche State Park—a 1.4-mile (2.25km) out-and-back and an easy stamp for your Minnesota State Parks Hiking Club passport.
Stick with me as we climb a half-mile of wooden stairs through spruce, burst onto a 250-foot overlook where waves boom below and then follow a short spur trail to a secluded cobble stone beach before heading back. Just in time too, it started raining buckets just when we got to the car. Around 5 minutes after the last shot in this Shovel Point Trail video.
Short trail, huge payoff, let’s see if Shovel Point earns a spot on your own must-hike list.
