This lecture explores the diverse world of 16th- and 17th-century Persian compilatory manuscripts—majmū‘a, jung, safīna, bayāż, and muraqqa‘. Bringing together poetry, prose, epistles, treatises, devotional writings, biographies, and more, these books function not only as repositories of texts and images but as carefully constructed systems shaped by an internal logic. Dr Mahroo Moosavi examines several examples, considering how their contents were selected, assembled, and curated, and discusses new methodologies for analysing this significant yet understudied corpus.
Dr Mahroo Moosavi is a historian of early modern Iran whose work focuses on Safavid manuscript culture and the interplay of art and literature. She is a visiting professor at the Institute for Cultural Studies, University of Düsseldorf, and has held research fellowships and teaching roles at institutions including the Max Planck Institute, the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, the University of Oxford, and the University of London.
