Even before I joined the army,
I heard about German atrocities.
If captured, Jews and Communists
were ordered to step forward.
They were shot immediately.
I heard about this.
The Germans made it all the way
to the Northern Caucasus.
In 1942, I was still at
home in Makhachkala.I turned 17 the summer of 1942.The Germans captured the city of Nalchik.
To this day there are
a lot of Jews in Nalchik.
There were many Mountain Jews
in Grozny and Pyatigorsk too.
I heard about the capture of Nalchik.
Nalchik is about 400 km north of
Makhachkala.
It's located between Pyatigorsk and
Grozny.
It was rumored that the
Germans wrote to Hitler:
"We've found all of these Mountain Jews
in Nalchik."
"What should we do with them?"
I don't know if this actually happened.
Supposedly Hitler replied:
"What difference does it make
if the dog is black or white?"
"It is still just a dog."
Many Mountain Jews were killed.
