CSX and R.J. Corman Kentucky Derby Specials | 5/6/23

On May 6th, 2023, I set out to Lexington Kentucky early in the morning so I could chase both Kentucky Derby Specials running for this years event. The Kentucky Derby is a famous annual horse race/event here in Louisville that has been around for nearly 150 years. For this years event, both CSX and R.J. Corman both ran special trips for railroad VIPs and shareholders, departing Lexington early in the morning and arriving in Louisville in the early afternoon. Both trains took the exact same route, the former L&N now Corman “Old Road” from Lexington to Anchorage, there they get on the CSX LCL to Louisville. I started the chase in Lexington and after chatting with some fellow railfans/YouTubers and catching an NS freight, the Corman special departed first just after 8AM. Their consist consisted of their two new 50th anniversary SD70ms, a car from the My Ole Kentucky Dinner Train, and the 02 business car. I would end up chasing it to Benson Valley, where I would head back to Frankfort to wait for the CSX OCS. which was about 30 minutes behind. Unfortunately the train got ahead of me after then, so I only got it 3 other times. Right after they arrived in Louisville, the Corman consist was ready to head back to Lexington. Though I would only end up chasing that as far as Simpsonville as I was getting very hungry. Thanks for watching!
