The Abandoned Town with a Ghost Mansion in the Center rotting away (Everyone Left)

The Castello di Pomaro traces its origins back to the 12th century, when the powerful Aleramici family—future marquises of Monferrato—built it atop a strategic hill to guard the borders of their territory. Its position gave it eyes on the surrounding plain and control over trade routes and local passes.

Over time the castle passed into the hands of the Paleologi in the 15th century, who transformed it from a purely military fortress into a more luxurious residence. Under their patronage it gained gardens and refined living quarters, becoming a summer retreat for the marquises.

In the 17th century, the castle’s defensive walls suffered heavily: in 1637, during the war between Spain and France, Spanish forces attacked, undermined, and demolished much of its outer fortifications. Large sections were blown up, leaving only segments of the original structure intact.

Afterwards, the property passed through several noble families. By the late 1600s it belonged to the Ardizzone family, who rebuilt what remained and converted it into a private aristocratic residence rather than a fortress. In the 19th century, Rolando Giuseppe Dalla Valle undertook further restorations, and in 1950 it eventually passed to Count Calvi di Bergolo.

Today, while it is privately owned, the castle still hosts ceremonies and events such as weddings, allowing glimpses of its restored halls and grounds.
