The Handmaid's Tale was a fictional account of what can happen and how quickly things can change when an extreme religious faction takes control of the government. Until We Are Free is the true tale of Shirin Ebadi, the first Muslim woman to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Ebadi has inspired millions around the globe for her work defending women and children against a repressive regime in Iran and her quest to bring justice to the women in the country she loves. This film is a wake up call demonstrating how quickly the freedoms we have, like being able to drive a car or have our own bank account, can be taken away from us. The Iranian government would end up taking everything from Shirin Ebadi – her marriage, her home, even her Nobel Prize medallion – but the one thing it could never steal was her spirit to fight for justice and a better future for the women of Iran.
*It wasn't until 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed, that women in the U.S. were granted the right to open a bank account on their own.” We’re not that far from it.
