South Bay Soaring Society first became aware of Gary Fogel when he was the source of several of our programs on John Montgomery a local aviation hero. He has also been instrumental in sponsoring our GoToMeeting online presentation of our Wednesday program. Now he returns as a speaker on another historical aviation hero from San Diego.
Ruth Alexander, a less well-known but important aviatrix (female pilot) from the 1920s. Among other things, Ruth was the second woman in the US to receive a second class glider license, and later was the first woman in the US to become a glider instructor. She also set world and national records for women in powered aircraft in altitude and distance. Her story of success is an inspirational one, and describes what flying was like on the West Coast in the late 1920s.
