This 56-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at the Moment Musicaux in B minor, Op.16 No.3 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Written between October and December of 1896, the Six Moment Musicaux, Op.16 were composed during a time of great financial hardship for Rachmaninoff. Each presents unique challenges and demands on the performer. The third in this set is a “funeral march” or “lament”. Areas of focus in this tutorial include strategies for rhythmic pacing and overall tempo, tips for better tone quality and how to resolve phrases effectively, enhancing character through effective shaping and voicing, how to create contrast with similar or repeated material, how to avoid ghost notes, developing a good sense of rubato, improving control over dynamics, creating color, fingering suggestions, how to deal with large chords (especially if the performer has small hands), interpretation, long lines, and other stylistic elements to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.
