This wonderful D-Day veteran, C-47 Skytrain "Drag ’em Oot" of Aero Legends, departs the BBMF hangers at RAF Coningsby. It is an original and was delivered to the USAAF on the 28th December 1943 with serial 42-100882.
She made here way to England at RAF Greenham Common operating with the 87th Troop Carrier Squadron and it is here that she was named Drag ’em Oot.
On a bright moonlit night just after midnight on D-DAY, 6th June 1944, Drag ’em Oot dropped 18 paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division on the beaches of Normandy. She returned safely after the first mission and refuelled once more for a second consecutive mission to resupply troops into France.
Drag ’em Oot was transferred from USAAF to RAF in September 1944 and designated as a Dakota with serial TS422 and assigned 1 HGSU (Heavy Glider Servicing Unit) at RAF Netheravon. I have always wondered what happened to the one way ticket of the Horsa Gliders that took the brave men into the assault on Normandy. Well, this is what happened to them. They were actually recovered by Dakotas and Drag ’em Oot was one of those C-47s that did just that on the beaches of Normandy. Number 1 HGSU recovered around forty Horsa Gliders
After WW2 Drag ’em Oot left for Canada, where she served with the Royal Canadian Air Force until her service with the RCAF led her back once more to the USA as a civvy aircraft. Re-registered at N5831B, grounded for a little while, she was spotted by Paddy Green and he acquired her to be restored as genuine WW2 veteran aircraft.
Drag ’em Oot ended up in England and re-registed as N473DC and repainted in the original markings from her missions on D-Day with USAAF serial 42-100882, invasion stripes, 3X-P and her nose art Drag ’em Oot.
