With larger ships designed for long-term missions, such as the Galaxy-class, Excelsior-class, Intrepid-class and many more, Starfleet clearly needed a vessel for short-term planetary research missions. As such, the Nova-class was introduced. Given its introduction in the 24th Century, the ship is relatively smaller than the other classes operational during this time.
