I’m turning into a weather nerd because a rare La Niña forecast might bring the Chihuahuan Desert the winter rain it desperately needs.

I'm placing my bets now by spreading native seeds and establishing cover crops like Cereal Rye to fight erosion before the storms hit.

But the biggest lesson this month came from a mistake. A massive pile of horse manure created the single greenest spot on the ranch, proving that sometimes it's better to be lucky than smart.

Now, I'm trying to replicate that success with spent mushroom blocks. The only problem is they are nearly impossible to break apart by hand... so I decided to see if the bulldozer could speed things up.
