On 10 April 1993, the assassination of the hugely popular General Secretary of the ANC and likely successor to Nelson Mandela, Chris Hani, by far-right extremist Janusz Waluś, thrust Apartheid South Africa dangerously close to the brink of civil war. In the lead up to the country’s first multiracial elections and on the heels of two bloody massacres (Boipatong and Bisho) by the SADF in conjunction with a “third force” the previous year, the assassination of Hani marked a crucial junction on the road to Apartheid’s end. Both F.W. de Klerk and Nelson Mandela would be forced to make public broadcasts that evening to plead for calm. It remains arguably the closest South Africa came to violent implosion. In 2022 Waluś was freed on parole and later deported to Poland in 2024.
