Here's a breakdown of some of Cameron Smith's defensive techniques from this 2016 State of Origin Game.
Probably the most effective and efficient tackler I’ve seen play in the NRL is Cameron Smith. He was a player operating on a different level from the players around him.
In my opinion, the one skill that separates him from the rest of the pack more than any other is his knowledge of and ability to use simple wrestling and grappling techniques on the field to efficiently move his opponents around and get them to the ground.
This is a player who weighed about 90kg, tackling players who are 10, 20 & 30 kg heavier than him and doing it up to 50 times a game.
