James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital (JAHVH) proudly hosted its 17th Annual Veterans Day Parade Saturday, November 8th, commemorating the courageous men and women who have served the nation. This year's event marked a significant milestone in honoring the sacrifices and contributions of the nation’s Veterans.
Veterans Day traces its origins back to Armistice Day, which commemorated the end of World War I when the armistice with Germany went into effect on November 11, 1918. Armistice Day became a national holiday in the United States in 1938, primarily focused on honoring World War I Veterans. However, after World War II and the Korean War, there was a movement to recognize all Veterans, not just those who served in World War I. In 1954, Congress passed legislation to change the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, making it a holiday to honor American Veterans of all wars.
The celebration began promptly at 9 a.m. with welcome remarks from Mr. Shawn Hogan, Veteran Experience Officer at JAHVH, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. Hogan extended a warm welcome to all attendees, including Distinguished Guests such as Major General James Hartsell, The Interim Medical Center Director, David VanMeter and Florida State Attorney Ms. Suzy Lopez, who delivered remarks later in the program.
In his opening address, Hogan expressed his gratitude to several individuals and groups, including WWII Army Air Corps Veteran Mr. Jim Willey, who led the Pledge of Allegiance, Ms. Ericka Reynolds for her performance of the National Anthem, Chaplain Vivian Oliver for the invocation, and Mr. Van Morris for the 21-gun salute and Old Glory presentation. Special appreciation was also given to Ms. Holly Wilson, CDCE Specialist, the parade champion, and the numerous volunteers who dedicated their time to making the event a success.
The parade's opening ceremony featured a moving presentation of colors by the American Legion Post 5 Color Guard, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mr. Willey, and the National Anthem sung by Ms. Reynolds. A stirring 21-gun salute and Old Glory presentation by Mr. Morris paid tribute to the fallen heroes.
JAHVH Interim Medical Center Director, Mr. David VanMeter, delivered poignant remarks, emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to serving Veterans and their families. "It’s our job – our commitment – to serve Veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors as they’ve served our country…not just on Veterans Day, but every day," VanMeter stated.
State Attorney Suzy Lopez also addressed the audience, highlighting the importance of supporting Veterans and reaffirming the community's dedication to their well-being.
The parade featured a diverse lineup of participants, including the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Rough Riders, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, Santa’s Drill Team, Veteran Service Organization groups, car and motorcycle clubs, Junior ROTC units, high school bands, youth groups, and military heritage vehicles. These units paraded down Richard Silver Way, with viewing stands set up across the street from the Fisher House II.
In a gesture to further support the well-being of Veterans, those in attendance were encouraged to get their flu shots, offered at a vaccination cart on the SCI Basketball Court. After the parade, attendees were invited to join for a luncheon sponsored by the Veterans Canteen Service, featuring hot dogs, chips, and beverages provided by USF Health, Wright’s Deli, and PepsiCo.
The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital concluded the event by thanking the community and staff volunteers who made the celebration possible. Hogan wrapped up the ceremonies by wishing everyone a Happy Veterans Day and thanking the Veterans, active-duty military, and the community for their unwavering support and participation.
