Camera A at Kīlauea captured its final moments during the dramatic onset of Episode 38. At 9:57 PM, just minutes after the lava fountain began to intensify, a surge of molten lava overtopped the crater rim and engulfed the camera, destroying it instantly. This video contains the final 10 minutes of footage ever recorded from Camera A.
This event is part of Kīlauea’s ongoing sequence of episodic fountaining eruptions, which have been occurring regularly throughout the current eruptive period. Each episode typically begins with rapid pressurization inside the vent, followed by a powerful burst of lava fountaining that can reach hundreds of meters into the air. These episodes often last only minutes to hours, but they deliver intense localized activity—sometimes producing spatter ramparts, new lava overflows, and, as seen here, extreme conditions that can overwhelm even hardened equipment.
Episode 38 followed this same pattern: a quiet buildup, a sudden transition to high fountaining, and then a fast-moving overflow that surged toward the camera’s position. Camera A documented dozens of these episodes over its lifetime, making its final recording a dramatic close to months of continuous monitoring.
Footage like this helps scientists and viewers understand how episodic eruptions evolve, how quickly conditions can change, and why field equipment near active vents is always at risk.
