The upcoming Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight looks like a lot of fun, but also kinda the exact opposite of what DC games need right now after decades of clinging to the Batman Arkham formula.

Batman: Arkham is a superhero action-adventure video game series based on the DC Comics character Batman, developed by Rocksteady Studios,[1][2] WB Games Montréal, Armature Studio and Camouflaj, and published originally by Eidos Interactive and currently by Warner Bros. Games. The franchise primarily focuses on the long-lasting conflict between the titular Dark Knight and his archenemy, the Joker. It consists of four main installments and a spin-off, along with a handheld game, three smaller titles for mobile devices, two virtual reality games, tie-in comic books and novels, and an animated film. The continuity established by the games is often referred to as the Arkhamverse.

The main games in the Batman: Arkham series have been met with success and critical acclaim, with praise for their narratives, voice acting, characters, world design, graphics, and gameplay. The games have collectively sold more than 32 million copies worldwide.

DC Comics (originally DC Comics, Inc.,[3] and also known simply as DC) is an American comic book publisher owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.[4][5] DC is an initialism for Detective Comics, a comic book series first published in 1937.[6] DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book companies, the first comic under the DC banner being published in 1937.[7]

Originally at 432 Fourth Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, the company offices have been located at 480 and later 575 Lexington Avenue, 909 Third Avenue, 75 Rockefeller Plaza, 666 Fifth Avenue, and 1325 Avenue of the Americas. DC Comics was located at 1700 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan until April 2015, when DC Entertainment transferred its headquarters to Burbank, California.[20]

In 2017, approximately 70% of the American comic book market was shared by DC Comics and its long-time major competitor Marvel Comics,[21] though this figure may be distorted by the fact that sales of graphic novels are excluded. When all book sales are included, DC is the second largest publisher of comic books, after Viz Media, and Marvel is third.[22]
