Living in Sun Valley - Reno, Nevada

Several farmers settled in Sun Valley and neighboring valleys during the early 1900s and began raising hogs, goats, chicken, and sheep plus a variety of produce. A few prominent families in the area owned farms across the valley stretching from Red Peak to North McCarran Boulevard. The farmers would set up on Commercial Row and sell their livestock and produce to residents of Reno and Sparks to earn their living.

Sun Valley overlooks Reno from its perch above Wedekind Road just east of the Desert Research Institute. Next to the institute is Truckee Meadows Community College, an excellent two-year college, as well as a High School program that prepares students for early careers or four-year colleges. North Valleys High School is one of the high schools zoned for Sun Valley in addition to Hug High School the big rival of North Valleys. The brand new Desert Skies Middle School opened its doors in fall 2019.

Sun Valley is a family-friendly community in the North Valleys. On the weekends, you can find the Sun Valley Community Park filled with people of all ages. The park has a baseball field, biking paths, a skatepark, and even an outdoor roller hockey rink. At the southern end of the park, you’ll find a playground and grass field, along with the outdoor Sun Valley Community Pool featuring a water park.

In the North Valleys, you’ll find Stead and the Reno-Stead Airport. The airport hosts the annual STIHL National Championship Reno Air Races every fall. This event showcases hundreds of personal and military aircraft for races, contests, and tours of massive aircraft for an entire week.

While Sun Valley is considered a neighborhood of Reno, it is a short 10-minute drive via Highlands Ranch Parkway to central Sparks. Cross Pyramid Highway and stay on Sparks Boulevard and you’ll find Kiley Ranch Golf Course and Bar. Kiley Ranch is a 9-hole course surrounded by a master-planned community. Just south of the course and neighborhood is the Sparks Galleria. This shopping center is a significant hub of activity, featuring a Costco Wholesale, Best Buy, Fitness Connection, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Marshalls & HomeGoods. Great restaurants include Tha Joint Sushi & Grill, Campo, Blind Onion Pizza & Pub, and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews.

The University Village Shopping Center on McCarran Boulevard features multiple churches, auto repair shops, and a laundromat. Other shopping centers for Sun Valley residents can be found in Lemmon Valley and Golden Valley only 15-minutes north of the community. North Hills Shopping Center on Golden Valley Road has Raley’s, North Valleys Library, Anytime Fitness, and Steak n’ Shake. Sky Vista Shopping Center on Lemmon Drive is the jackpot for grocery shopping, providing a Walmart Supercenter, Smith’s, and Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. CVS and Walgreens also have a location in the center, ensuring you can find all your family’s needs here.

In the heart of Sun Valley, residents can find Hobey’s Casino & Restaurants for their dining and gaming outings. A few minutes southwest of Sun Valley is Bonanza Casino offering the highly rated Cactus Creek Prime Steakhouse and Branding Iron Cafe.
