Rear view from Amtrak's eastbound Capitol Limited as it traverses the famous B&O Magnolia Cutoff between Okonoko and Orleans Road on the CSX Cumberland Sub.
Built in 1914 the cutoff eliminated nnearly 5 miles of main line track as a new line was cut through the back and forth bends in the Potomac River. The cutoff includes 4 tunnels, two bridges over the Potomac River, several cuts and a Chineese Wall section. The entire project was completed in just two years.
The cutoff was recently ruined by CSX looking to clear the line for double stack containers with the removal of B&O style CPL signals and notching of the original tunnels.
