Faith, Family, and Finding Her Path | Maria’s Story (Episode 2/8)
Maria grew up in a small village, high in the mountains above Málaga, where faith and family were the foundation of her life. With both parents deeply involved in the Neocatechumenal Way—her mother as a catechist, musician, and counsellor, and her father as a catechist and teacher—Maria’s upbringing was filled with music, spirituality, and strong family ties. The biggest influence on her for music, was her mother’s love of music, which shaped her own passion.
As one of seven siblings, Maria saw first-hand the depth of her family’s faith, especially during convivences, where she realized how central it was to their lives. But growing up wasn’t always easy. During high school, while she was never rebellious, she struggled to fully open up to her parents. Between academic pressures, anxiety about university, and caring for elderly grandparents at home, her final school years were a difficult time.
Leaving home for university in Granada, Maria lived first with her brother, then later with a friend, before moving to Valencia—eight hours away by train—for her master’s degree. Throughout her time away, she kept a close connection with her family, sharing many video calls with her parents and later her little sister, who had started studying in Málaga. Even when living in England, homesickness reminded her how important her family truly is.
Now, Maria reflects on how these experiences have shaped her. Her faith is no longer just a part of her life—it’s who she is.
