The beaches of the Isle of Harris were always praised as places of great beauty, but also of solitude. Luskentyre, Scarista, and Sailbost were synonyms for remoteness and disconnection from the modern world. It changed in post-covid era, with people trying to make up the time spent in lockdown, and recently, with the growing popularity of coolcation. The islands of Lewis and Harris became a trendy holiday destination, and though their beaches are still not packed with tourists, they are not as quiet as they used to be. Even more remote beaches like Traigh Mheilein, which was even less visited, because it demands a 45-minute cliff walk, are now quite busy in the good weather. Still, there are a few beaches which can give you this 'first explorer' vibe. One of them is Cravadale Beach (or Traigh Crabhadail). It is located around 30 minutes away from the mentioned Traigh Mheilein, and it also demands the same cliff walk from Huisinis, which is not an adventure for people with vertigo, because the unprotected path leading along the 70m high cliff face is partially quite slippery and steep in a few places. At the last part of the walk, instead of turning left towards Traigh Mheilein, you turn right and continue your walk towards Loch na Clebhaig, where the path becomes somewhat boggy and even more slippery. From there, you can see the twin beaches of Traigh Crabhadail. The grassy terrain, which is sloping towards the beaches, is weirdly shaped with a wave-like mounds full of rabbit holes, adding an exciting feeling of exploration of a magical land. The beach itself is also amazing - similarly to the beaches in the area, the sand is very bright, nearly white, and the shallow water in nice weather is as blue as on some tropical islands. It is flanked by low, grassy dunes and patches of sand covered with stones smoothed by the waves to ideal ovals. The water is quite warm for the Isle of Harris and much safer to swim than Traigh Mheilein, which is affected by the strong tidal current. Definitely, one of the most magical places I've ever been to. During our 2-hour visit, we didn't meet another person, but on our way back to Traigh Mheilein, we spotted a pair of walkers heading towards Cravadale - other than that, complete solitude.
