Carmen Dorsey-Spitz, a junior at Moriarty High in New Mexico, won the girls championship race at the Brooks West Regional Cross Country Championships at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Dorsey-Spitz, the reigning New Mexico Class 4A state champion, covered the 5-kilometer layout in 17:38.7 to become the first female athlete from her state to advance to compete at the national final since Julia Foster from Albuquerque Academy in 2010. Dorsey-Spitz also became the first New Mexico girls competitor to win the regional title, securing a berth to participate Dec. 13 in the national championship race at Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego, Calif. Dorsey-Spitz elevated from winning the sophomore race last season in 18:22.9 at the regional meet.
