“Sonny Boy” (1928) crystalises the sentimental excess that defined the dawn of the crooner era. Written in a single afternoon by the powerhouse Tin Pan Alley team of Buddy DeSylva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson, the song was allegedly dashed off as a gentle spoof—so dripping with pathos that no one would dare sing it in earnest. Enter Al Jolson. In Warner Bros.’ part-talkie “The Singing Fool,” Jolson belted the lullaby-ballad straight to the tear ducts of Depression-era audiences, turning apparent schmaltz into box-office gold. His recording spent twelve weeks at No. 1 and passed the million-seller mark, making “Sonny Boy” one of the industry’s earliest crossover smashes.
