Ready for the ultimate Melbourne walking tour? This video guides you through Melbourne's 7 best laneways, showing you the best street art and hidden gems the city has to offer! This is a must-watch for your first visit to Melbourne, because there's so much more than just Hosier Lane! Follow this easy 1-day itinerary.
7 Laneways you don’t want to miss + a bonus
Drewery Lane: Filled with beautiful mosaics and custom-made tiles, this lovely laneway features street art of its own style. One section commemorates veterans in a beautiful tribute. And yes, there’s a gorgeous vertical mural, too.
Guildford Lane: A green slice of oasis in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Previously a boring laneway, this space has been reimagined as part of a community effort. Now beautifully growing, chock-full of potted plants and cafes to boot.
Hardware Lane: A European-esque multi-block pedestrian-only laneway. Full of great restaurants and cafes with ample outdoor seating. Definitely head here for a meal or snack. 🍜 Vietnamese pho lovers, check out Pho Thin Australia, an outpost of the famous Hanoi restaurant.
Degraves St Laneway: Another lovely European-style laneway with cafes and outdoor seating.
Hosier Lane: The epicenter of Melbourne street art. Come, gawk and prepare for it to get a little bit crowded. Don’t worry, you’ll still get great photos. Out back of Culture Kings, look up for a magnificent Matt Adnate piece. The remainder of the work is regularly repainted. Be sure to have a look down the adjoining Rutledge Lane, too.
AC/DC Lane: Made famous by the sculpture that gives the laneway its name, this lane features art inspired by musicians.
Duckboard Place: Featuring the famous vertical Steen Jones, this corner may be one of the most photographed in Melbourne.
And because I recorded this whole darn thing and forgot to include another one of my faves (😲), here’s a bonus for you keen readers!
Block Place: Right out the back of the Block Arcade (which is worth visiting in its own right, more on that in another video) is this beautiful laneway full of little cafes and outdoor tables. This one rarely makes the top laneways list in Melbourne, so it’s a real hidden gem! It doesn’t even register as a lane on Google Maps, so we’re onto something secret, here. We had a great brunch at Brown Sugar Cafe.
