Getting Hands-on with Helicopters at Leonardo’s Philadelphia Training Academy

Vertical visited Leonardo Helicopters’ state-of-the-art training academy, a facility designed to train pilots, flight engineers, and maintenance technicians. Opened in 2021 as part of an $80 million expansion, the academy features full-flight simulators for the AW139, with roll-on/roll-off sims ready for the AW169 and AW609, plus virtual training devices for the AW119, AW139, and AW169 to help students master cockpit layouts before taking to the skies.

Students progress from ground-school theory and simulator training to live flight sessions using AW119 and AW139 helicopters, all under the guidance of experienced instructors. The academy also supports maintenance technician training, providing hands-on experience with AW139 and AW119 systems and early preparation for the AW609.
