In this presentation, Erik Jorgensen, AuD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at UW–Madison, explores the complex connections between hearing loss, hearing aid use, and social-emotional health in older adults.
Dr. Jorgensen discusses research from his Soundscape & Audiology Research Lab that reveals how untreated hearing loss can lead to meaningful changes in hearing-related behavior—shifts in auditory lifestyle, communication patterns, and social engagement—that increase the risk of loneliness, isolation, and depression.
He also highlights how hearing aids can play a powerful role in reducing these risks by supporting communication and promoting more active auditory lifestyles. This talk offers a research-based look at why hearing health is essential not only for communication, but for emotional well-being and quality of life as we age.
