on this episode Of My township My economy on AfroEntial , we sat down with numerous Spaza shop owners just to touch base on the current climate of the indigenous spaza shops in the township , the spaza shop sector is a long standing township business model that has been has been in existent since the early 70s , spaza shops have been a back bone of township economy and the highest contributors in the 5.2 annual GDP contributed by the informal sector
We firstly sat with Mr Mathonsi OF Good Hope Tuck-shop whose a resident of Soshanguve he has been operating his Tuck shop since the early 2000s , But over the years he has been faced with difficulties to grow and maintain his business , he reached out to my township to express and share his journey with us .
Secondly we sat with Mr Elias Masalesa of Maelis Trading whose originally from Garankuwa , he has also been operating for a while and has been considered one of the most generous and noble man in his surrounding he has shown empathy to his neighbors something not quite expected from a business man , he has fed the unemployed and helped widows but his business has recently took a knock and suffered drastically making it difficult for him to continue with his good gesture he reached out to us to share his story , hoping that he might find some assistance to reshape his business and pile up his stock again .
Thirdly we sat With Mr Jack Tsiri of Jack tuck shop , he has been trading from the early 199s since his arrival in Pretoria he has been an accredited vendor in a school for many years he has operated his business both from a school and his compound , and he gained popularity amongst his community peers because of his helping hand as well as his service to the people make their daily means easy , but lately like many other indigenous traders he has also been left with a huge challenge of maintaining his spaza shop with high inflation food getting more and more expensive and not being able to buy in bulk he has had to lower down on stock especially on products that are quite costly to products such as vegetables and fruits as well as bread , check out the rest of the interview to hear Mr Tsiri expressing his challenges and experience in his business journey
