East Orange, New Jersey has a rich history that includes its origins as part of Newark, its growth as an agricultural area, and its migration as a destination for Black middle class families after World War II:
Origins
East Orange was originally part of Newark and was known as Newark Mountains. In 1780, the townspeople voted to change the name to Orange. The area was separated from Orange township and became a municipality in 1863.
Agricultural area
By the end of the 19th century, East Orange was a prosperous agricultural area.
Industrial section
East Orange has an industrial section called Ampere, where electric motors, signs, chemicals, and plastics are manufactured.
Migration
After World War II, East Orange became a destination for Black middle class families migrating from the South and other parts of the state.
Parks
East Orange is known for its parks, including Oval Park and Columbian Park.
Water needs
In the early 1900s, East Orange needed five million gallons of water per day to supply its population of 20,000. Today, the Water Commission serves over 65,000 residents and uses an average of 11 million gallons of water per day.
East Orange is part of a group of four towns in Essex County, New Jersey, that are sometimes called The Oranges. The other towns are Orange, South Orange, and West Orange.
