Kappa Meen Curry is a beloved traditional dish from the southern Indian state of Kerala, known for its bold flavors and rustic charm. its a comforting combination of boiled tapioca served with spicy fish curry, usually made with a rich red chili and kokum or tamarind-based gravy.
Ingredients:
Fish (sardines, mackerel, or kingfish) – 500g
Shallots – 10–12, sliced
Garlic – 6–8 cloves, crushed
Ginger – 1-inch, crushed
Green chilies – 2, slit
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
Kashmiri chili powder – 2 tbsp (for color)
Normal chili powder – 1 tsp (for heat, optional)
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Fenugreek seeds – ¼ tsp
Kudampuli (Malabar tamarind) – 2 pieces (or tamarind paste – 1 tbsp)
Salt – to taste
Water – 1½ cups
Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
Serve a generous scoop of hot kappa with a ladleful of meen curry on the side (or poured over). Add raw sliced onion and green chili on the side if you like.
