Welcome back to @AutoScholarwithMrB ! Today we are replacing the timing chain tensioner for this 1.8 turbo engine. The procedure normally calls for removing the timing belt, however there is a way to do this without removing the belt, or even setting the engine to top dead center!
Parts needed are timing chain tensioner, gasket set for the tensioner, valve cover gasket, and the special tool for compressing the tensioner (which should come with the new tensioner.)
If you have camshaft position codes, and your timing belt timing and condition is good, the tensioner has probably failed. A failed tensioner also can cause noise at start up and while the engine is running.
BE SURE TO MARK EVERYTHING!!! FAILURE TO CORRECTLY MARK ALL PARTS WILL RESULT IN ENGINE VALVE DAMAGE OR TIMING BEING OFF!!!
WARNING: Do not use a cheap tensioner bought on Amazon or Ebay, it will fail. The Dorman set or the factory tensioner is recommended.
